How To Become a Model: Open Calls
Another part of trying to become a model is going to Open Calls. An Open Call is when an agency opens its doors to the public and allows anyone interested in modeling to come and potentially be signed by the agency. Below is a list of helpful tips for attending an open call.
What should I bring?
Everyone should know his/her stats: Younger children- guardian should have child’s clothing size and shoe size. Female teens and women should know their height, bust, waist, hips, dress size and shoe size. Male teens and men you should know their height, shirt size (neck & sleeve) waist, inseam, suit size and shoe size.
If you are brand new to the industry and have never modeled, you should bring a couple current, natural hard copy photos of yourself. These can be 4×6 digitals/snapshots: one head shot, one full length. If you have modeled, you should bring your portfolio as long as it is current. Actors should bring their up-to-date resume’ and headshot.
What should I wear?
Anything casual that shows bodyline, nothing too baggy. Female teens and women should either bring or wear heels in case we need to see them walk (this is only for ladies 5’9” or taller who may be able to do runway.) Hair and makeup should be very natural.
For guys, casual is fine. Nothing baggy, we need to see your bodyline.
What’s the open call process like?
Very simple. When you arrive you will be given a short application to fill in your contact info and stats. Once you are called, an agent will review your application and any photos you brought with you. They may ask a few questions, and then you will have 2-4 digitals taken and done. Easy, easy. It is very rare for an agency to give a decision on signing a model right then.
How long will it take?
Your actual face time with an agent is only 5 minutes tops. Don’t be surprised if it takes just a couple minutes. Waiting to be seen can take longer, depending on how many people are at the open call.
What if I have no modeling experience?
No worries, you have to start somewhere and this is a great market to get some experience.
How should I do my hair and makeup?
Natural, Natural, Natural. We need to see what we have to work with. No wigs, weaves or extensions. No false eyelashes or heavy makeup.
How soon will I know if I’ve been selected?
That is a tough question. First, we not only have a lot of prospective models/talent show
up for open call, but we also receive numerous submissions every single day. We carefully review every single submission, which can take time. Since we have so many people to continually go through, you will not be contacted if we believe we cannot represent you at that current time. If you have a look we believe we need or will need, it can take 2-4 weeks to hear from us depending on workload. If we feel we can represent you and market you, we will call or email you to bring you in for an interview.
